How to identify an AFL trading card
Quick answer
Identify an AFL trading card by its release year and series, card number, player and any parallel, insert, signature or serial number. Match the exact card against the manufacturer's checklist before comparing prices; the player's name alone does not identify a card.

Read these identifiers
- Photograph the front and back. Write down the card number, the release year and the series name (for example a Footy Stars release) exactly as printed.
- Look the card up in the manufacturer's checklist for that year and series. Select publishes checklists for its AFL card and sticker releases back to the early 1990s; a card that is not listed may belong to another set or maker.
- Record the finish and markings: foil or refractor-style surfaces, insert names, signatures and serial numbering such as 12/50. These separate otherwise identical cards of the same player.
Check condition before you buy
- Inspect corners, edges and the surface under angled light for whitening, dings, creases and scratches without bending the card.
- Check the centring of the front border and look for print lines or marks, which affect condition grading.
- For a graded card, record the grading company, grade and certification number, and confirm them through that company's own lookup.
Avoid these comparison mistakes
- Base cards, parallels, inserts and signature cards are different comparison groups. Do not price a base card from parallel or signature sales.
- Team sets, lots and sealed packs sell differently from a single card. Exclude them when valuing one card.
- Stickers, swap cards and promotional cards are separate products even when they show the same player and year.
Compare the same item, not just a similar name
Search the year, series, card number and player, then add the parallel, insert or serial number if the card has one. Compare raw cards with raw cards and graded cards with the same grade from the same grader. Check evidence dates, because demand moves with a player's season. Scan the card to start identification, then confirm every printed identifier against the checklist.
